The explosions in Winter Bay

Illustration from an explosion that occurred in 1874 at the factory in Vinterviken.

The production of dynamite was a risky business. Several explosions occurred in Nobel's factories in Södermalm and in Vinterviken.

In June 1868, the dynamite factory's laboratory explodes. The blast is heard throughout the city, windows are shattered as far away as the Old Town and 14 people are killed. Theories about the cause of the accident are put forward, but there are no survivors to tell what happened.

This is how Aftonbladet describes the devastation a few days after the accident:

- Some insignificant dismemberments, apart from the recognizable ones of the corpses, have also been found, scattered here and there around the place where the laboratory building stood, such as burnt bones, mutilated and burnt parts of fingers, small browned and fluffy pieces of skin, a braid of hair and loosely worn hair tufts, rags of clothes, which after the accident were found hanging in the trees or lying on the ground. All this is gathered in a couple of baskets - a sad sight.

Already in May 1874 it bangs again. In an explosion in the press house, 12 people die, including 7 children.
